Research vessel grounded in 'Thorskafjord
The "Dröfn" ran aground on July 27, 2016, around 3 p.m. in the Thorskafjord at Barðaströnd in the Reykholar area, north of Reykjavik. An Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter was monitoring the situation regarding possible oil pollutions. The conditions on site were good and there was no immediate danger for the ship which was resting on the ground with a list to starboard. The crew secured the vessel with an anchor and was waiting for the flood hoping to be able to refloat the ship shortly after midnight. A Coast Guard helicopter was stood down, but the lifeboat from the station in Reykhólar was sent to assist. At 1.15 a.m. on July 28 the ship was safely refloated.
