Tanker lightered and refloated
In the midday hours of Aug 7 the "Doina" was refloated from its grounding site off Nonnenwerth on the Rhine by the river tug "Pilot". The German lighter tanker "Yvonne" (MMSI-No.: 211506360), which had been called from Koblenz, had gone alongside the "Doina" and taken over 500 tons of the diesel fuel since 10 a.m. The "Doina" was towed to Brohl for surveys. Then the fuel is to be transferred back before the "Doina" may resume the voyage to Trier. The cause of the grounding was yet investigated, but thought to have been a navigational mistake. Tanker grounded on the Rhine
In the afternoon of Aug 6 2014, the "Doina" ran aground on the Rhine at the southern tip of the island Nonnenwerth. It got stuck perpendicular to the island's tip outside the fairway, so that passing ship traffic was not hampered. Several attempts by other barges to pull the diesel loaded tanker off, failed, as the towing wires broke. Salvage attempts were finally postponed to Aug 7. A part of the cargo is to be lightered before being refloated by a tug.
