Discovery involved in fire fighting on Bake Platform

Fri Oct 03 23:13:59 CEST 2014 Timsen

About five vessels were involved in extinguishing a fire aboard the Baker Platform 45 miles south-west of Anchorage, as well as a cutter, helicopter, and another aircraft. The primary firefighting efforts came from the "Discovery" which remained at the scene along with Cook Inlet spill response vessel "Endeavor" after firefighters in Alaska have brought under control the fire on the Hilcorp-operated natural gas platform at Cook Inlet. The blaze, which destroyed the crew's living quarters, was detected during a morning safety meeting on OCt 2, 2014. A helicopter evacuated four workers from the platform about 8 miles (13 kilometres) offshore. No one was injured and there was no environmental damage reported. The Baker platform has just one producing well, which was shut off remotely. A subsurface pipeline that carries gas to Nikiski was also closed. A unified command made up of Hilcorp, the Coast Guard and Alaska's Department of Environmental Conservation monitored the platform during the night. The platform contained about 41,640 litres of diesel fuel, 8000 gallons of drilling mud, and 1000 gallons of hydraulic oil. The cause of the fire esd being investigated, but it was not believed to be production related. Report with photos: http://www.upstreamonline.com/live/1379131/Firefighters-contain-Baker-blaze
