DHT Jaguar among tanker series with rudder trouble

Fri Dec 16 09:03:37 CET 2016 Timsen

Studies have revealed meter-long cracks in the helm of several newly built supertankers from the South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries. The cracks - believed to be the result of a design fault - now lead to 35 supertankers to be examined for similar errors. The problem became known four months ago when DHT Holdings routinely examined six of its supertankers within the warranty period. They found meters long cracks in the helm of the DHT Jaguar", the first ship in a series of six identical supertankers delivered by HHI. Similar faults were subsequently found on the other two supertankers from the same series. The "DHT Jaguar" and "DHT Leopard" have been in the shipyard for repairs, while a third tanker was still under construction at the shipyard. Hyundai Heavy Industries have built a total of 35 supertankers of that type, but with different rudder cconstructions. All ships will now be examined. In addition to DHT Holdings Gener8, Euronav and Frontline have supertankers of that type, who have all been informed of the problem. Several owners have investigated ships without problems, while others have found faults that now must be repaired.
