Oill spill during salvage attempt
Salvage operations regarding the "Dharma Kencana VIII" which sank near Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, in pos. 08 28 S 119 49 E, on Oct 14m 2016, after grounding on reef, were interrupted after an oil spill was noted during the efforts to lift the wreck during Week 13, 2018. Local authorities suspect there was a technical error when salvors tried lifting the vessel, causing the oil to leak. It was unknown how much oil has spilled and an investigation was ongoing.
Ferry capsized in Indonesia
The "Dharma Kencana VIII" struck a reef and started listing to starboard and capsized in the evening of Oct 14, 2016, shortly after leaving Labuan Bajo at western tip of East Nusa Tenngara Island. There were 121 passengers on board who comprised of 113 adults, four children and four infants. Rescue teams were sent from Labuan Bajo, and there were no casualties. One passenger fell in a panic and broke a leg. The ship sank at 7.30 p.m. It also carried 31 vehicles consisting of 27 vehicles from Maumere, four cars and motor bikes from Labuan Bajo.
