Ferry sidelined due to crank shaft repair
The "Delaware" needs repairs to the crank shaft in one of its engines. For the next few days, only two vessels will be available the "Cape Henlopen" and the "New Jersey". Technicians from EMD, the engine manufacturer, were on-site to fix the problem detected by the ferry engineering team. The new engines were under warranty, and he credited Chief Engineer Nesmond King with noticing a vibration in one engine and alerted the port engineer. The schedule of ferry trips has been modified for the next few days.
Smokestack fire on ferry
On Sep 26, 2014, the 320 foot long ferry "Delaware" caught fire while berthed at Cape May, New Jersey. The fire started in the ferry’s engine room by an ember in one of the exhaust stacks. The night watch engineer discovered the fire and alerted local authorities. The fire department along with Coast Guard fire boats were able to extinguish the fire within two hours. The two crew members on board were able to escape the blaze unharmed. There were no passengers on board at the time of the fire. The preliminary estimate was there was only minor damage. Car crash on ferry deck
No one was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on the decks of the "Delaware" at the New Jersey terminal on Aug 22, 2014, .about 9:40 a.m. The Driver of a 2012 Ford Explorer rental vehicle on the port side of the ferry and accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes while maneuvering. The Explorer lurched across the car deck and hit a silver Honda Civic. The impact pinned the Civic against the ferry's starboard bulkhead. The occupants of the Civic were transported to Cape Regional Center in New Jersey for evaluation of what appeared to be minor injuries. The Delaware had departed the Lewes Ferry Terminal at 8:15 a.m. It sustained minor cosmetic damage. The ferry schedule was delayed for about an hour. The "Cape Henlopen" took over for the "Delaware" while the accident scene was cleared. The accident remained under investigation by Delaware River and Bay Authority police.
