Trawler slammed into tanker
The Troon based fishing vessel "Progress" smashed into the "Decathlon" which had been at anchor in Ayr Bay on its way out to the fishing grounds on May 29, 2019. The RNLB "Jim Moffat" from Troon was called out at 3.55 a.m. and sped five miles to the scene. The Marine Protection ship "Minna" was also sent to the tanker which did not suffer damage. None of the six crew aboard the 55.5 foot trawler were hurt. The "Progress was able to limp back to Troon" under its own steam but was escorted by the lifeboat. It was 5.20 a.m. before the lifeboat got back to its station. The damage was so extensive that the trawler had to tie up at Troon awaiting work at the Alexander Noble & Son boat repairer at Girvan. The damage was some thousands of pounds. The full height of the bow has been damaged and the metal mast at the front collapsed as the impact fractured the bowrail and mountings. The police carried out a breath test on the skipper Keith Wilson but it proved to be negative. Tha tanker berthed in Las Palmas on June 7.
