Criminal proceedings launched after unproperly stored oil sludge was found on deck
Officials of the Water Police Station Brake controlled the "Darya Chand" in the port of Nordenham -on Apr 7, 2016. They found four unlocked oil drums, covered only with a tarpaulin on the 1st upper deck. Investigations revealed that tthey contained sludge, most of which resulted from the cleaning of the engine on the voyage from Australia to Europe. A common disposal of sludges was not requested in Nordenham. This type of storage of sludge constituted a criminal offense and criminal proceedings were launched against those responsible. The prosecutor Oldenburg ordered a security fine of 1,000 Euros for the 41-year-old Indian master and the 45-year-old Indian chief engineer. The Port Authority Brake ordered the proper disposal of the oil sludge during the stay in Nordenham.
