Currituck removing shoals

Mon Dec 19 11:17:37 CET 2011 Timsen

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting dredge work this week along the Chincoteague inlet to improve fishermen's navigation after fishermen had complained that they were only able to navigate the inlet during high tide. The "Currituck" was removing dangerous shoals from the channel Dec 18 and 19, 2011. The vessel had been finishing work in the Philadelphia area and was called upon to dredge some critical inlet areas in Chincoteague. Norfolk District project manager Kristen Mazur says fishermen had complained that they were only able to navigate the inlet during high tide. Mazur says a larger portion of the channel is scheduled to be dredged in January.
