Disabled bulkcarrier to be unloaded and drydocked

The Coast Guard on Dec 12 continued to work with the operator of the "CSL Tadoussac" after it allided with the Torco dock at the CSX facility near Toledo, The crew of the "CSL Tadoussac" anticipated having all 27,000 tons of iron ore offloaded to the CSX facility by the end of the day and is arranging for the vessel to be relocated to the Ironhead Marine facility in Toledo so that permanent repairs could be carried out in drydock. Members from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Toledo and Lloyd's Registry of Shipping continued to investigate the full extent of damages and mitigate environmental impact prior to the vessel's relocation to the shipyard. The Coast Guard strived to protect the environment and natural resources while ensuring the safe navigation of marine traffic. By working closely with local authorities, first responders, and vessel and industry representatives, the Coast Guard was able to respond to and mitigate further environmental impact while ensuring the safe navigation for all waterway users.

Oil spill contained after pier allision on Maumee River

A Coast Guard crew aboard a 45-foot small response boat from the Station Toledo, Ohio, inspected a damaged pier along the Maumee River near Toledo after the "CSL Tadoussac" allided with the pier on Dec. 11, 2012 at 8:24 a.m. The master of the ship notified a watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Detroit about the allision at the CSX Toledo Ore Dock. The master also immediately notified the National Response Center of the fuel oil leak. Sector Detroit then notified response teams and accident investigators from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Toledo, Station Toledo and the Toledo Fire Department. Coast Guard responders and investigators responded to accident which caused a puncture in the starboard stern bunker tank. Coast Guard investigators examined the damaged starboard stern area of the "CSL Tadoussac" at the Torco dock at the CSX facility, The vessel was reportedly carrying 27,000 tons of iron ore and was enroute Montreal-Toledo. Crewmembers aboard the "CSL Tadoussac" immediately started pumping fuel out of the punctured tank and into another of the ship’s tanks in order to bring the fuel level below the puncture mark. The discharge of fuel was stopped at about 10:15 a.m. The amount of fuel that leaked from the ship is unknown at this time. Approximately 800 feet of oil containment boom has been stretched across the Torco dock slip and is currently containing the oil sheen within the slip to assist with clean up. The O'Brien's Response Management Inc. has been contracted to clean-up the fuel spill and is currently on scene working with the Coast Guard and other local responders. Ship strikes pier, leaks fuel near NW Ohio river

The U.S. Coast Guard says a 730-foot ship in northwest Ohio backed into a pier at a dock near the Maumee River, punctured a tank and leaked fuel into the water. The Coast Guard says Canadian bulk carrier CSL Tadoussac hauling 27,000 tons of iron ore backed into a pier near Toledo on Tuesday morning, Dec. 11, 2012. The crew immediately pumped fuel out of a punctured tank and into a different one to stop the leak. It wasn't immediately clear how much fuel spilled. About 800 feet of oil containment boom was stretched out to contain the oil sheen. No injuries were reported. The dock had minor damage.
