Bulkcarrier refloated one week after grounding
The "CSE Clipper Express" was refloated in the afternoon of Mar 17 with the help of a tug and taken to Akita port. The vessel was safely berthed in Akita in the evening hours. The bulker had run aground in a severe storm on Mar 11 about 400 meters off the coast at Honshu Island in the vicinity of Yurihonjo. The ship had sailed from Akita in ballast, bound for Taiwan, and was caught in a severe snowstorm with wind about 25 meters/sec and wave heights up to eight meters. The 20 crew members, among them 11 Taiwanese and nine Chinese, had remained on board after the grounding.
Cargo ship grounded in severe storm
The "CSE Clipper Express" ran aground on Mar 11 around 1.30 p.m. Tokyo time about 400 meters off the coast of the Akita Prefecture at Honshu Island in the vicinity of Yurihonjo. The vessel had left Akita on Mar 11 in ballast, being bound for Taiwan, and was caught in a severe snowstorm with winds of about 25 meters/sec. and wave heights up to eight meters. The crew of 20, among them 11 Taiwanese and nine Chinese, was unharmed and remained on board for the time being due to the ongoing storm which made it safer to stay aboard.
