Container loss in Bay of Biscay

Thu Mar 06 09:32:26 CET 2014 Timsen

On Mar 5, 2014, the "Star Standard" arrived at the port of Antwerp coming from Santa Maria, Colombia, where it had sailed on Feb 24 with cargo of bananas, with storm damage. The vessel had encountered a severe storm while crossing the Bay of Biscay during which container racks toppled to starboard side. 17 containers were washed overboard, more were damaged and crushed. Before entering port, the reefer had to wait a couple of hours at anchor with the Belgian sea pilot on board on orders of the Transport Department that the ship was only allowed to sail to port during daylight. During the transit to port it was escorted by the tug "Fairplay 23". The reefer entered the Boudewin Lock at 6.40 p.m. and was docked in port at 8.25 p.m. Dutch reports with photos: http://www.tugspotters.com/site/content/2014/03/fairplay-23-met-star-standard/ http://www.tugspotters.com/site/content/2014/03/fotos-van-de-star-standard/

Lost container recovered off Caskets

Fri Feb 14 12:20:05 CET 2014 Timsen

In the foremidday of Feb 13, 2014, the Maritime Operations Centre Cherbourg sent the salvage tug "Abeille Liberté"(IMO-No.:9308699), to recover a reefer container lost by the "Star Standard" some days ago in the Atlantic after it left Portsmouth bound for Santa Marta in Columbia. The box was drifting in the southern area of the traffic separation zone of the Caskets and had first been sighted by a merchant ship on Feb 11. An EC 225-helicopter of the French Navy was dispatched on Feb 12 but could not relocate the container in stormy weather. It was seen again by another merchant ship the same evening. On Feb 13 morning the EC 225 took off again and located the box. It was tagged and the "Abeille Liberté" sent out, which took it in tow in the afternoon. In the evening it reached the Naval Port of Cherbourg and docked at 8.30 p.m. With the daybreak of Feb 14 the container was pulled into the Flamand Dock and redelivered to the Star Reefers.
