Barge scraped bridge
The Lake Barkley Bridge in Trigg County was struck by a barge in the evening of Dec 13, 2015. At 6:45 p.m., the Coast Guard received a report from the"Jinx P. Smith" that it had scraped the left descending pier on the bridge causing a dent in the port lead barge. The tow boat was pushing four empty fertilizer barges at that time. Due to the minor nature of the scrape the Coast Guard did not ask that the bridge be closed to traffic. However, once an inspector arrives on site around 8:30 p.m., the bridge was closed for about 20 to 30 minutes to allow access to the deck so a safety check can be run on the bridge structure. Provided no damage is found, the bridge will immediately reopen to normal traffic flow.
