Last migrants disembarked from Lampedusa
The last of 11,000 migrants who recently arrived on the island of Lampedusa, have left and been taken to the Italian mainland on Sep 27, 2023, aboar the ferry 'Cossyra' after being taken by buses to the port. Red Cross officials on Lampedusa had been racing to clear their migrant camp on the island to make room for an expected surge in boat arrivals later in the week. Police reinforcements and additional Red Cross volunteers had arrived on Lampedusa in preparation for any new arrivals. Fire on ferry in drydock
On May 13, 2014, two workers were injured in a fire that broke out inside the Italien ferry "Cossyra", normally serving the route Trapani - Pantelleria, but actually drydocked in the Aorno basin of the Motonave Cossyra owned by the Treghetti company for some welding work. Afte ra small explosion, the flames spread from the engine room. One of the two workers, an electrician from Palermo, who was working for the Tesim company, was in critical condition with 80 % burns. The other worker was transported to Villa Sofia for treamtment but his injuries is not life threatening. During the fire fighting operations also one firefighter had to be transported to to the intensive care unit in hospital. Several teams of firefighters have been engaged in the fire-fighting operation. The magistrate Geri Ferrara, who co-ordinated the investigation on the fire ordered the seizure of the engine room. The surveys were conducted by the Harbour Authority. Inside the engine room barrels with oil, possibly containing some residual fuel, were found, that may have triggered the fire after it was ignited by sparks of the welding machine.
