Container ship saved single hand sailor

Fri Nov 20 11:38:01 CET 2015 Timsen

The "CMA CGM Corneille" recovered a 63-year-old Canadian national who abandoned his sailing vessel in order to receive medical assistance in Bermuda, arriving there in the morning of Nov 19, 2015. The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a call from RCC Norfolk reporting that the sailing vessel "Ekaterina" was approximately 200 miles north of Bermuda, with a single handed sailor on board in need of medical assistance and who wished to abandon vessel. He had suffered lacerations and bruising to his legs and symptoms of fever, all of which was compounded by the loss of battery and engine power on board. Initial plans by the U.S. Coast Guard to launch a C-130 fixed wing and MH-60 helicopter to rendezvous with the casualty were put on hold as contact was made with the container ship which diverted to the distress position. The ship was en route from Charleston, U.S.A. to Port Said and successfully recovered the casualty for onward disembarkation in Bermuda a few hours later. At 10.54 a.m., the patient was landed ashore by the pilot boat "St. David" and transferred via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

CMA CGM CORNEILLE will make the first direct link between Venice and Far East.
