Mammoet salvaging Confid in Lomm
The salvage of the "Confid", 1601 ts (EU-No.: 02320953), which broke in two in a flood channel of the Maas river near Lomm on May 6, started in the morning of May 14. The Dutch salvage company Mammoet was contracted to do the job. Preparatory work started at 7 a.m. after the oil recovery has been completed the recent days.
Sand barge broke in two on the Maas
The "Confid" broke in two in a side arm of the Maas river near Lomm on May 6, 2014, around 11 a.m. while being loaded with 1400 tons gravel. The crew of four saved themselves by jumping into the water. They climbed aboard a nearby dredger ship. Only the bow remained above water half an hour after the barge started to split. A Mercedes which had been carried aboard was recovered by the barge "Wilsia" and taken to shore. As oil started to leak out, an anti pollution vessel was called from Maasbracht. Rijkswaterstaat laid out oil booms. The fire rescue was called to patch the leakage. A police helicopter was dispatched for air surveillance. There were about seven tons diesel fuel aboard. The salvage in the channel at Lomm will take at least one week. The gravel from the cargo hold was first to be removed as far as possible. A diver surveyed the wreck, but the cause of the sinking was still unclear.
