Container ship refuelled distressed yacht
On Dec 8, 2022, at 5.20 p.m. AEDT the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) coordinated the response to a distress beacon activation of the yacht 'Southern Mist' (MMSI: 503262700) about 430 kilometers southeast of Esperance, WA. The yacht had lost rigging and had no fuel to motor back to safety. The AMSA diverted two merchant vessels in the area, the container ships 'Conti Conquest' and ' OOCL Texas' to the yacht and tasked the AMSA Perth-based Challenger rescue aircraft to the scene. The 'Conti Conquest', en route from Fremantle to Adelaide, was the first to reach the yacht in pos. 35:15.06 S 126:15.07 E, transferring fuel to the vessel on the second attempt at around 11.30 p.m. in 6-metre seas and 25-30 knot winds, allowing the boat to make its way to safety around midnight.
