Containerships Introduces Second LNG-Fueled Ship

CMA CGM subsidiary Containerships has taken delivery of its second container ship powered by LNG, the CONTAINER SHIPS POLAR At the beginning of May, the 1,380-TEU vessel started her voyage from Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China to Northern Europe where she is now operating alongside sister ship CONTAINERSHIP NORD on the redesigned BALT 2 service. The vessel’s first LNG bunkering will be carried out in Rotterdam at the end of June. She will be fueled with approximately 200 metric tons of LNG via ship-to-ship bunkering.

Malta Freeport hosts its first LNG-powered container ship

Malta Freeport Terminals welcomed the first ever LNG-powered container ship to visit Malta during the course of the vessel’s maiden voyage from Asia to Rotterdam. Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi, whose portfolio includes the Freeport Authority visited this ship to mark this special event, the Malta Freeport authority said in a press release. The mv Containerships Polar, operated by a subsidiary of leading shipping line CMA CGM, discharged over 560 containers during its call to Malta. Containerships Polar is the second in a series of four LNG-fuelled vessels put into service by CMA CGM. The use of LNG is fast gaining attention as it will reduce sulphur oxide emissions by 90 to 95 per cent as well as reduce costs.
