Six fishermen died in collision
On March 24, 2020, at 9 p.m. the ‘Comau‘, coming from Valdivia, was in collision with the fishing vessel ‘Victoria‘ in the Bahía de Corral between the mouth of the Valdivia river and the Isle of Mancera in the Los Ríos region, Six fishermen were trapped in the galley and killed when their ship capsized. It was towed to the shore in Niebla after the accident. Only one of the fishermen could be rescued alive, as he was outside and wearing a life jacket at the time oft he collision. He was transferred to the Corral Hospital with hypothermia.At 11 p.m. fishermen clamied they had heard sounds inside the ‘Victoria‘ which was lying on its side in a half submerged state. Around midnight Gersa divers and other specialized units joined the rescue operation, including the Valdivia firefighters from Niebla and Corral, Chilean Navy personnel, the tug ‘Don Martin‘ and SAMU ambulances. In the morning of March 25, the mayor of Corral, Gastón Pérez, confirmed the death of the six Corraleños, all seasoned fishermen. Poor visibility was pointed out as a possible cause of the accident.
