City sank on breakwater
The "City" ran aground on a breakwater in Sakata, Honshu Island, in the Yamagata Prefecture, in rough weather on Jan 10, 2016, around 5.20 a.m. The vessel’s hull was breached, it started taking on water and foundering with a growing starboard list. The 18 crew members, among them 14 Russians and four Bangladeshi, were evacuated by a helicopter of the Japanese Coastguard from the wheelhouse and taken to shore. The ship was en route from Akita to Funakawa with a cargo of wood. A salvage operation was pending on the weather. The hull was completely submerged with only cranes and accomodation block still protruding from the water.
