Engine breakdown following propeller trouble

Fri Jul 01 09:23:19 CEST 2016 Timsen

A rope fouled the propeller of the "Carelia" on June 29, 2016, in the Saimaa Canal, while en route from Nuijamaa to Vyborg with passengers on board. The propeller was cleared by a diver two hours later, but when the ship resumed sailing, one of the two engines broke down, so the ship had to turn back and returned to Nuijamaa on June 30 on one engine. A spare part was ordered for repairs and the "Brahe" called from Hamina as a replacement for the coming days.

Vessels sucked against each other

Mon May 30 10:23:34 CEST 2016 Timsen

The "Carelia" with tourists on board contacted the cargo vessel "Kelt" in the Saimaa Canal in the so-called Vyborg Sea Canal leg on May 27, 2016. The passenger vessel was heading for Vyborg, while the "Kelt" was moving towards the Baltic Sea, en route from Siilinjarvi to Landskrona. Both vessels had Russian pilots on board. While the "Kelt" was trying to overtake the "Carelia" at a reduced speed, the cargo ship did not reduce the speed, and the sucking effect pulled her port side bow towards the "Carelia"'s starboard side. The vessels remained stuck to each other for about three minutes. No injures were reported, but both vessels suffered dents and scratches. The "Carelia" berthed in the port of Lappeenranta.
