Bulkcarrier saved single hand sailor

Wed Feb 22 13:08:39 CET 2017 Timsen

The Australian single hand sailor, Shane Freeman, 61, participant at the Golden Globe Race, which is is due to leave England in 17 months, on June 16, 2018, had to abandon his yacht "Mushka", a Tradewind 35, enroute to England. He had decided to go through the Cape Horn before going up the Atlantic. On Feb 18, 2017, about 300 miles west of Chile, the "Mushka" was hit by a large wave and was dismasted. Luckily, the skipper was inside. He spent five hours separating the broken rig while trying to keep the boom in order to make a makeshift rig. From Punta Arenas a P-111 aircraft took off to the position the yacht and verify the condition of the sole crew member, and to launch a rescue raft if necessary. On the other hand, the Maritime Government of Punta Arenas, in coordination with the B & M Shipping Agency, requested the support of the "Frontier Ambition", sending a 3FAH signal, since the ship was 100 miles north of the yacht. Shane asked for a few hours to assess the situation before choosing, 15 hours later he had to abandon the ship and was able to embark on the "Frontier Ambition", not without having previously flooding the boat by cutting a pipe. Once on the bridge of the freighter, the Australian was able to realize the sea conditions and confessed to have chosen the right option by abandoning his sailboat. He will be disembarked in Chile from where he intended to return to Australia. Shane Freeman had been sailing for 70 days at the time of the emergency, having left from the port of Melbourne on Dec 11, 2016, bound for the Falklands.
