Ship with controversial cargo anchored off Sant Tomàs
The "Burhan Dizman" took shelter from bad weather on Jan 7, 2024, off the beach of Sant Tomàs, Menorca. The vessel, en route from El Aaiún, was destined for the port of Güllük with a cargo of fishmeal and an ETA as of Jan 13. The origin of cargo has generated enormous controversy. The conflict arises as a result of complaints made by the Polisario Front, which claims that the fishmeal comes from catches made in Sahrawi waters. This statement contradicts two rulings by the European Court that prohibited the negotiation of agreements with Morocco that affect the resources of this region. Catalina Rosselló, president of the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People of the Balearic Islands, has strongly condemned this practice, calling it another example of the plundering of the natural resources of Western Sahara. Although the European fleet withdrew in July 2023, after the agreement with Morocco expired, Rosselló affirms that there were still European companies involved in this trafficking, considering that they are stealing the resources of the Sahrawi territory with impunity. She calls for a thorough investigation into this case and the adoption of measures to prevent the looting of Western Sahara's natural resources.
