Dredge barge sank while under tow
The Coast Guard issued a safety zone and temporarily restricted traffic on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway after a dredge barge towed by the "Brown Water VIII" sank east of the Galveston Causeway railroad bridge on July 26, 2016. The restriction allowed one-way and single-wide barges only, from mile marker 356 to mile marker 357. The owner has contracted T & T salvage to remove the barge, which was being towed to be scrapped when it sank. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway was reopened to all traffic near Galveston after the barge was refloated in the evening. The "Brown Water VIII" towed the dredge barge to the Kodiak scrap yard in Dickinson at 4:40 p.m.
