Bulkcarrier drifting in the sea again

Tue Oct 08 11:26:00 CEST 2013 Timsen

In the afternoon of Oct 7 the "Bright Royal" had broken free from the grounding site at Ly Son and was drifting towards Quy Nhon city in the Binh Dinh province. after two days of high swell and winds of more than 50 knots. The main worry was that oil continued to spill oil from the cargo ship. The ship drifted nearly 100 nautical miles to Quy Nhon waters and was about 26 nautical miles from shore. Two cargo holds were flooded and causing a danger of sinking. The "Bright Royal" was carrying more than 27,200 tons of clinker from Vung Ang (Ha Tinh) to Bangladesh when it hit a reef which tore two 1.5 m wide holes in the engine room and tanks with 387 tons fuel part of which spilt. The Quang Ngai Border Guard High Command has sent two boats to coordinate with Bright Royal’s crew to anchor the ship which was abandoned by its crew of 24 on Oct 5. It has also asked the Coastal Information Station of central Da Nang city to warn operating ships of the drifting vessel so as to avoid any accidents.
