Collision on the Rhine

Thu Jul 11 21:38:21 CEST 2019 Timsen

On June 29, 2019, at 8.15 p.m. the "Bohemia II", 3355 ts (EU-No.: 4807350), loaded with 1.800 tons heating oil, was in collision with the passenger m/v "Beethoven" (EU-No.: 04306750) on the Rhine which had pupils of three classes of the Heinrich-Böll-School in Merten with their families on board for a shool's out party. The smaller ship was enroute from Colonia and reduced its speed near the freeway bridge in Bonn. The tanker was unable to stop in time and tried an evasive manoever which failed, and it struck the starboard side stern of the "Beethoven". Three crew members suffered injuries when they fell on the deck due to the impact. The interior was damaged. The tanker suffered a breach of six meters length. The stern of the "Beethoven" was deformed. The police investigated the "Beethoven" before she was allowed to return to its berth at the Brassert Shore and then headed back to Colonia. The tanker berthed in Rotterdam on June 30 and continued to Moerdijk on July 1 before heading to Giessendam for repairs. She arrived on July 2 at 3 p.m. for repairs at the Den Breejen Shipyard. The tanker sailed again on July 17 and headed to Rotterdam, where it arrived on July 18 at 6 a.m. and resumed operations.
