Fishing vessel grounded off Storfosna
On Jan 6, 2025, at around 7.10 p.m., the 'Birgerson', with five crew members on board, ran aground at Storfosna island, just north of Hitra west of Ørland in Trøndelag., when the vessel was heading north en route from Kristiansand to Måløy for crab fishing. The ship started to list to port side and was taking in water. Following the distress call, the rescue helicopter SAR Queen, the lifeboat 'Hornflyer' and emergency services proceeded to the grounding site. The HRS South Norway was coordinating the response. At 7.55 tp.m. the helicopter was on the scene and started evacuating the fishermen. Half an hour later, everyone was safely hoisted on board. Short time after midnight the ship could be towed off and was taken to the quay of the Kvernhusvik Skipsverft in Hitra for damage assessement. Regarding the cause of the grounding, the ship had got a little off course and the helmsman made a starboard correction just beforethe impact, but still did not clear the underwater reef, so the ship got stuck.
