Beryl sank off Shetlands
The crew of 5 of the north-east-based trawler "Beryl" was rescued on Mar 22, 2011, after their boat started taking in water in the North Sea at 2.30 p.m. about 25 miles north of Unst, Shetland. Despite the efforts of the five-man crew to pump out the water, the trawler sank. Four of the crew were picked up by a nearby vessel, the "Onward - BF 440". The coastguard had sent a helicopter with deatering pumps, and the skipper remained on board struggling to keep the ship afloat, but the help was not on scene in time. When the helicopter arrived the ship was seriously listing, and also the captain was forced to abandon the vessel and went on board the "Onward".
