Container ship grounded on Mississippi
The 'Belita' ran aground on the Mississippi nea Poydras in pos. 29° 51.92' N 089° 54.63' W at river mile 81 below New Orleans near the Plaquemines Parish and St. Bernard Parish line on March 27, 2020, at 03.20 a.m. enroute from Mobile to New Orleans. The levee was not struck, but the shp became stuck on a riprap, a rock like structure aling the coastline. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans responded to the accident near 12-mile point. The tugs 'Archie T', 'Higgins', 'C. D. White', 'Cecilia B', 'Slatten', 'Lizzy B. Moran', Mardi Gras`' and 'Shiney V. Morant' came to assist. The river was partially closed for transiting ships which were allowed to pass by one at a time only being pulled by tugs. After the vessel was refloated it headedd to New Orleans, escorted by the 'Lizzby B. Moran', and berthed at the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal at 9.10 a.m. The Coast Guard has been assessing the damage to the ship and was investigating the cause of the grounding.
