Tanker located zodiac in which 52 migrants died

Sat Aug 21 13:20:01 CEST 2021 Timsen

On Aug 19, 2021, the only survivor of a sunken migrant boat with 53 people on board was transferred ashore in Gran Canaria by an SAR helicopter, a woman from Ivory Coast. She was still stunned by the trauma she had experienced, and very weak. While she was receiving the first medical assistance, she already had an interpreter and specified that a total of 53 people had left from Morocco and that they had been at sea for a week. These data and the type of boat coincided with one of the latest alerts provided by the Caminando Fronteras collective to the Spanish authorities, about the departure of a pneumatic with 53 people on board to Fuerteventura on Aug 12 from El Aaiún (Sahara). 35 men, 16 women and a minor have died, according to the figures that Caminando Fronteras handled on that boat. For days, they have been in contact with a man who had on board his wife and his son, a child, and that he has told them that most of the occupants were from the Ivory Coast. On the remains of the zodiac, which was drifting in the Atlantic Ocean about 220 kilometres off Gran Canaria, in addition to the survivor, the Maritime Rescue helicopter was able to recover the corpses of two people, a man of about 17 years and a woman of about 20, with the appearance of being pregnant, although this detail must be confirmed by the autopsy. Around the pneumatic, which was overturned and with one of its skids punctured, there were no other body or remains, neither when the helicopter arrived, nor when the ship that found them, the 'Evros' on its way from Conakry to Amsterdam, approached. The woman was transferred from the Gran Canaria airport to the Insular Hospital with severe dehydration. She has not required intensive care and was already in the hospitalization ward, although she is pending how she evolved.
