Cargo ship knocked down port crane

Mon Jun 19 15:12:12 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "BBC Wisconsin" allided with the quay in Vaasa on June 18, 2017, when entering port at 1.30 p.m. and knocked down a crane of Kvarken Port when being about to take project deliveries from Vaasa to the Caribic. The collapsed crane was old, so the material damages remained limited. However, the ship was close to causing more damage. The cause of an accident will be investigated. For some reason, the vessel did not use tug assistance when it came into the port. At the time of the event, a moderate windy wind was blowing which could have caused the ship to drift toward the dock and the crane that was destroyed by the allision. There were an experienced pilot and the captain involved in the decision not to use a tug. Next the debris of the broken crane has to be removed. The "BBC Wisconsin" sailed again on June 20 at 6.40 pm., next being bound to St. Petersburg, ETA June 22.
