Ship ran into embankment of Kiel Canal
On Feb 5, 2017, at 2.38 a.m. the "BBC Orion" ran into the northern embankment of the Kiel Canal at kilometer 24,5. The ship was enroute from Waterford to Lindö with a cargo of 4500 tons steel. The accident was caused by a blackout, following which the main engine and the rudder failed. To keep the ship from drifting out of control, it was emergency anchored. At 3 a.m. the ship was manoeverable again with all systems working properly. A defective oil filter had caused the blackout and could be repaired by the crew. The ship was allowed to continue to Kiel for a class inspection. It berthed in the North Port at 8.10 a.m. and continued the voyage at 7.40 p.m. after the end of inspections and investigations by the police. On Feb 6 at 4 a.m. the "BBC Orion" reached Lindö.
