Ship released after most serious defiencies were rectified

Wed Aug 08 12:00:35 CEST 2018 Timsen

After several serious deficiencies, which were found on the "BBC Lagos" after she ran aground off Helsingborg, have been rectified the ship has left the port on Aug 7 at 8.50 p.m. A total of 17 deficiencies, some being serious, were discovered during the inspections in port. Among other things, the ship had several safety deficiencies, which meant that the ship was not allowed to leave the Skåne harbor. The safety culture on board was found to be inadequate by the Transport Agency. The automatic alarm was turned off and safety systems were manipulated. After the most serious shortcomings were rectified the ship was released. The Russian master of the vessel was arrested suspected of negligence and being drunken at the helm with 2,5 per thousand. The "BBC Lagos" was now being expected in Las Palmas on Aug 18.

Svitzer Hermod to refloat grounded vessel

Sun Aug 05 11:58:07 CEST 2018 Timsen

After the salvage plan was presented by the shipping company and the insurance company of the "BBC Lagos" and had been approved, the work to refloat the vessel started in the afternoon of Aug 5. The conditions were favourable to pull the ship off the beach without the threat of an oil spill. Higher water levels were expected at the grounding site in the afternoon, which supported the work. Anti pollution resources were in place to handle any oil spill. The Danish tug "Svitzer Hermod" (IMO: 9788124) was called from Helsingborg to carry out the salvage. Also on scene were the Coastguard vessels "KBV 034" and "KBV 432". In the afternoon the ship was refloated by the"Svitzer Hermod" jointly with the Faroes Islands-flagged tug "Sund" (IMO: 9793076) which had sailed from Malmö at 11.30 a.m. The convoy, guided by a piot, was escorted into the south port of Helsingborg by the the Coastguard vessel "KBV 432" at 4.20 p.m. The ship was detained after the Transport Agency found more defiencies during their inspections on board. 2nd time within a few days: Drunken master ran ship aground off Sweden

Sat Aug 04 17:18:25 CEST 2018 Timsen

In the evening of Aug 3, 2018, the "BBC Lagos" ra aground at Råå, south of Helsingborg at the Swedish Øresund coast. The Swedish authorities tried to in vain to stop the ship before it got stck, but no-one responded. The captain was suspected to have been drunk at the helm. Shortly after 11 p.m. the Maritime and Air Rescue Center remarked that the ship was sailing on a wrong course and repeatedly called it over radio. Also a pilot boat tried to get in touch with the vessel. They got no response and at 11:30 pm. the ship ran aground in pos. 56° 0.10' N 012° 43.03' E. When the Swedish authorities boarded after the grounding, it was clear that the ship's captain was heavily intoxicated with 2,5 per thousand. He was arrested for drunken sailing. There were no signs of oil spillage from the ship which was stuck 500 meters from the shore. Also tugs were called, but no attempt will be made to pull the ship off before a dive survey of the hull has been completed. The Coast Guard's surveillance vessel "KBV 314" was nearby and quickly on scene. A diver of the Coastguard conducted a survey of the hull during the morning hours of Aug 4. No damage to the hull, either from the inside or outside, was found so far. The vessel was on its way from Klaipeda to Las Palmas with a cargo of 5000 tonnes of wheat.
