Ferry towed to Hjalhem more than five hours after engine failure
On Feb 3, 2019, the "Bastø II", serving the Halhjem-Sandvikvågroute, suffered an engine failure due to a technical problem with the main engine on the Bjørnafjord with 102 passengers on board at 1.50 p.m., about 20 minutes after the departure from Halhjem. Two small tugs were called to assist and started towing the ferry back to Halhjem around 3.10 p.m. with the "Molly" at tghe bow and another boat aft, but the task was too great for them. A larger tug, the "BB Server" (IMO: 9410612), arrived at 4.30 p.m. Only at 7.15 p.m. the ship berthed back in Hjalhem in a joint operation. The reserve ferry "Marsteinen" has meanwhile been called as a replacement, but there were cancellations and delays on the route throughout the afternoon and evening. Operator Torghatten Nord took over the route on Jan 1, but the delivery of new ferries they were going to use on the connection has been delayed from the yard, and the company has chartered four older ferries in the meantime. Ferry sidelined due to technical trouble
The "Bastø II" was inoperative and has been sidelined at Karljohansvern in Horten on Dec 28, 2016, due to problems with vibrations. With the "Bastø II" out of service, there remained four ferries pliying the route between Horten and Moss. It would take time to repair the damage at the shaft.
