Request for information on animal export license

Wed Apr 14 11:13:45 CEST 2021 Timsen

Igualdad Animal (Animal Equality) on April 13, 2021, has sent a request for information to the General Directorate of Health of Agricultural Production of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on whether the "Bashar One Transport" has obtained a license to export animals from Spain to the Middle East. In the request for information, the organization has stated that in the summer of 2019 the European Commission issued requirements against the authorization by Romania of the export of 66,000 lambs to the Persian Gulf aboard the vessel. According to the organization, it did so based on an investigation carried out by the Australian organization Animals International that documented the death of "hundreds" of lambs during the voyage, "because the ship's ventilation is not capable of reducing the heat." In the text addressed to the MAP, the entity states that in May 2018 the ship sailed from Fremantle with 69,007 sheep and 263 cattle to the Persian Gulf, but the unloading was delayed for a week and observers reported that the animals had suffered a "severe heat stress for eight days" and there were "sheep breathing with great difficulty". The report recounts other events on the ship in recent years and, therefore, asks the MAPA if this ship has been approved for the transport of live animals from Spain and for what reasons. If this license has not been granted, the association asks the Ministry to detail "for what reasons it has been denied."

Livestock carrier sold for retirement

Thu Sep 17 11:54:48 CEST 2020 Timsen

The Livestock Transport and Trading (KLTT) - Australia's largest buyer of live sheep - has sold the 'Al Shuwaikh' for an undisclosed amount. A Jordanian company, Al Delta Company, purchased the vessel about two weeks ago. The 'Al Shuwaikh' was due to be phased out from the Australian trade because of new marine orders that prohibited twin-tier vessels from operating in Australia beyond Jan 1, 2020, without an exemption. Until now the vessel did have an exemption but it was only used for sheep. A clause in the paperwork was discovered only when it was pointed out to the company by agriculture department officials, that denied them the ability to load cattle on deck five, costing KLTT $1million per voyage from WA. The vessel was due to be retired.
