Tanker pumped cargo remains into the German Bight waters

Thu Jan 24 11:32:13 CET 2019 Timsen

On Jan 23, 2019, officers fof the marine police Brunsbüttel inspected the "Bartok" for compliance with the regulations of MARPOL in the oil port of Brunsbüttel. The check lasted from 8 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. The ship had unloaded a cargo of calcium nitrate solution in Hamburg and was then to take up cargo at Brunsbüttel-Ostermoor. After departing from Hamburg, the tanker had sailed into the German Bight, had washed the cargo tanks and pumped the washing water into the North Sea. The investigation showed that a residual amount of 177 liters of the cargo had been dumped thereby. After consultation with the Hamburg Public Prosecutor's Office, criminal proceedings were discontinued and an administrative offense procedure initiated. A security deposit of around 500 Euros had to be paid. The tanker left the oil port in Brunsbüttel on Jan 24 after taking on a new cargo and headed to Rotterdam at 2.30 p.m.
