Salvage may be very complicated
1,5 years after the sinking of the 'Barlovento I', the Maritime Captaincy was now looking for an alternative plan to the one presented by the company which won the bid to refloat it. The vessel had capsized in Suances on May 30, 2018, while performing dredging work in the port's entrance channel. The second refloating plan presented by the company in charge, BAM Maritime, after having failed the first attempt, has been rejected, being regarded as unfeasible. There were special difficulties because the insurance told that it had to discard th company and offer the jobs to another. The second attempt of refloating was expected for the summer period, taking advantage that the sea conditions would be more favorable. There have been conversations with one salvage company in particular. The insurance presented a draft plan of the company and the port captaincy valued the technical and logistics details. Until the end of 2019 the company can present all the necessary documentation. The ship meanwhile was completely buried, so a salvage may be a very difficult operation. Salvage work has commenced
On July 13, 2018, the 'Punta Lucero' arrived off Suances to try to refloat the sunken dredger "Barlovento Primero". The operation, carried out by the company Bam Maritime Services, will last for about three weeks, depending on the state of the sea. The wreck will be towed to the Requejada pier. The company in charge of the work has been hired by the insurance of the owners of the dredger, after negotiations with different companies to refloat the vessel.
Dredger sank completely day after capsize
Salvamento Marítimo demanded from the owners of the "Barlovento Primero" a plan to remove the fuel and prevent any type of spillage into the sea from the wreck of the dredger. Early on May 31 the wreck submerged completely off the port of Suances. It did not pose any obstacle to the entry and exit of other vessels . Actually there were no signs of contamination. The position of the wreck has been marked and periodic notices were being sent to the navigators. . Initially approximate one third of the keel were still sticking out of the water about 500 meters from the shore.
