Fire off Kristiansund
On Sep 4, 2024, at 6 p.m. a fire broke out aboard the Norwegian flagged fishing vessel "Bakkeværing", 308 gt (IMO: 8805341), with five people on board, approximately 30 nautical miles west of Kristiansund (Lat. 62.8745 Lng. 6.9418). Vessels in the vicinity diverted to assist, and SAR helicopters from Ørland and the Coast Guard have also been sent to the ship by the Central Rescue Center for Southern Norway (HRS). The crew quickly established that the cause was heat from an exhaust pipe which had ignited the decor in the skipper's cabin. The pipe is very close to the cabin wall With the help of several extinguishers, the crew succeeded in getting the fire under control. The main engine was stopped and all diesel supply shut off. Four men have been evacuated by helicopter until 7.15 p.m. The crew was sent for a medical check-up, but the master himself remained on board until the ship was towed to Vorpeneset. In addition to other fishing boats, the Coast Guard vessel 'Jan Mayen' followed the tow.
