Maiden trip completed

Tue Dec 20 09:12:54 CET 2011 Timsen

The "Bahamas Express" completed its first passenger roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport on Dec 16, 2011, returning to Port Everglades about 10:30 p.m. The high-speed ferry made the crossing in about three hours each way, dock to dock. That's considerable faster than the "Discovery Cruise" that long plied the route and took about five hours on each crossing. The ferry carried 20 passengers from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport on the inaugural voyage, and 91 passengers on the return trip from Freeport to South Florida. Many lauded the ship's clean, modern features, but complained of difficulties carrying luggage up and down stairs. Some also missed the casino, buffet and entertainment provided on the "Discovery Cruise", which ceased operations in September. The catamaran can travel up to 32 knots, and make the Fort Lauderdale-Freeport trip in 2,5 hours in calm seas. The colorfully ferry was supposed to start service Dec. 9 but was delayed because of government paperwork. The "Bahamas Express" will operate the Fort Lauderdale-Freeport route daily except Wednesdays. Besides the time for crossing, passengers should plan on a half hour or more on arrival in each seaport to clear customs and immigration.

The line will use the fast ferry Pinar del Rio which sails at a speed of 32 knots and has a capacity for 463 people. Amenities aboard include a bar, a duty-free shop, pet cages and a baby changing area. The service will operate daily except Wednesdays, departing Port Everglades at 10am and returning at 10pm. The trip will take between two and three hours. The Bahamas Express is operated by the Balearia Group, a Spanish shipping company which has operated for 13 years in the Spanish Mediterranean.
