Kapitan Demidov tows stricken Orel-1 to Kavkaz port

The Kapitan Demidov, an icebreaker owned and operated by FSUE Rosmorport has escorted the stricken M/V Eagle-1 to the port of Kavkaz, the Azov Headquarters of Ice Ops. Then the Kapitan Demidov joined another Rosmorport’s icebreaker the Kapitan Chudinov plowing an open water path for the M/V Gas Monarch. Previous reports said the Ukraine-flagged Orel-1 sustained a breach to her hull while en route in the southern part of the Azov Sea.

Orel-1, trapped in ice in Kerch Strait, suffered hull breach or breaches, and asked assistance, presumably on Feb 18. Two icebreakers and an ice-classed tug were sent to distressed vessel. Master reported, that water ingress is under control with the help of pumps, vessel is in stable condition. Orel-1 was taken on tow and towed to Chushka Split area, as of 0000 UTC Feb 20 vessel is in position 45 34N 36 67E, either anchored or drifting, with no apparent danger. Vessel is sailing from Russian port in Azov sea and got stuck in ice in the beginning of February. Maritime Bulletin http://www.odin.tc
