Assassinator in preventive detention
Carlos Eugenio Lima, who in the midst of a presumed psychotic outbreak shot the captain and the first officer of the "Ayane" off Ensenada, was processed with preventive detention by the judge of the case. In a 23-page ruling, Magistrate Ernesto Kreplak, in charge of Federal Court 3 of La Plata, charged the suspect, who was the third officer on the ship, with the crime of "homicide aggravated by the use of a firearm" in detriment of Captain Alejandro Daniel García (39) and First Officer Juan Alfonso Pegasano (48). "The link between Lima and the illegal act perpetrated was accredited, with the degree of probability required by the instance, with the testimonies gathered by personnel of the Argentine Naval Prefecture. According to the statements of the remaining crew members, after having held discussions with the deaths, in the corridor of the captain's cabin and on the navigation bridge, respectively, he gave them bullet holes with a weapon of low caliber, which at the moment has not been found, presumably because it was thrown into the water by the aggressor ". For the magistrate, "it is necessary to point out that Lima not only had confessed to his companions that he had killed the captain and the first officer, but also that he had communicated with the port control in order to confess the double homicide that he committed." The magistrate considered that the accused should continue to be detained with preventive detention, taking into account the sentence in expectation (up to 25 years) and that Lima has a criminal record. Last week, the defendant, assisted by a public defender, refused to testify before the judge. The 'Ayane' remained stationary in La Plata as of Nov 1.
Double murderer had criminal record
The defendant Carlos Eugenio Lima (52), who in the midst of an alleged psychotic outbreak murdered the Captain of a ship and the First Officer of the 'Ayane' in Punta Lara, Ensenada district, refused to testify before the judge who is instructing the case. The defendant for the double homicide was transferred in the morning of Oct 25 to the headquarters of the federal courts in La Plata and, after meeting with an official defender, decided not to give an investigatory statement before Federal Judge 3 of La Plata, Ernesto Kreplak. After the judicial proceeding, the magistrate ruled that Lima, who confessed that he murdered the Master and the First Officer in an audio sent to his superiors in the morning of Oct 23, continued to be detained as the perpetrator of the crimes of "double homicide." The incident occurred on Oct 22 at around 11:30 p.m. aboard the “Ayane”, where Captain Alejandro Daniel García (39) and First Officer Juan Alfonso Pegasano (48) were assassinated. The tanker had sailed from the Port of Buenos Aires with 21 crew members (all Argentine) on Oct 11, and was anchored in the Rada area, near the riverine town of Punta Lara, in Ensenada. Lima, who was working as the Third Officer on the tanker, was the one who requested the presence of the PNA to surrender through the ship's radio. "The captain and the first officer are dead, I killed them and I'm going to turn myself in," he acknowledged. After the arrest, it was learned that the man had a criminal record, since in June 2008 he wounded a City Bell neighbor with six gunshot wounds who claimed the drain that he himself made by breaking the pavement of the street and then barricaded himself in his house until it finally surrendered. The tanker remained stationary at La Plata as of Oct 26.
Officer shot Master and Chief
In the morning of Oct 23, 2021, the Third Officer of the 'Ayane' shot both the Master and Chief Officer of the ship, while it was moored two miles off the shore at La Plata Anchorage, Rio de La Plata. Carlos Eugenio Lima, 52 killed the Captain, identified as Alejandro García (39 years old); and the First Officer, Juan Pegasano (48 years old), a former lieutenant of the Navy. On the bridge of the ship, minutes later, he himself called the Prefecture by VHF to indicate what had happened, saying “I killed them”. He was in a psychotic breakdown and fired several shots. Two Coast Guard boats from the Argentine Naval Prefecture were deployed from Berisso with specialized crews of the GC-73 Cabo Corrientes who boarded the tanker where they verified the death of the two men. On guard, at a distance of a cable, remained the 'GC-75 Bahía Blanca'. The tanker remained anchored and guarded by personnel from the Argentine Naval Prefecture. The ship had sailed from the port of Buenos Aires on Oct 11 and was waiting at the anchorage since Oct 21 to continue its operations. The rest of the crew was unharmed and managed to isolate Carlos Eugenio Lima on the starboard side. Both the Captain and the First Officer had embarked on Oct 22 because it was relief day.
