Tanker five minutes from running aground

Mon Nov 09 11:07:23 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Simay G" was in danger of runing aground at Gjeterøya in Dypingen on Nov 9, 2015, at 3:30 a.m. The pilot had just finished his service and was aboard the pilot boat just north of Fugløya when he discovered that the ship was changing course on the way out Helgeroa Fjord. The ship turned almost 180 degrees and went northwards in Dypingen getting out of the fairway. The tanker was loaded with 3,000 tons of caustic soda on board when the incident happened. The pilot contacted the traffic control in Brevik which called the ship immediately and asked if they were aware of the course and direction. The ship was told that they were headed for shallow waters and were instructed to change course. The traffic control notified a tug which was docked in Brevik to render assistance, but all went wellm and the tanker changed course again and went out the bay when being only a half cable from the shore. Winds blew with 12 meters per second at that time.
