Nuclear waste-laden ferry to call at Kavkaz port
Freight rail ferry "Avangard" (owner "Anship") with nuclear wastes on board will arrive soon from Bulgaria at the port of Kavkaz, Environmental Watch on the North Caucasus reports. The information was obtained from local residents and has not yet been officially confirmed. The cargo will be transported by train from the port of Kavkaz to the town of Zheleznogorsk of Krasnodar Territory to a mining and chemical plant for processing. Two years ago the Russian Government had adopted a decree on radioactive waste transportation and disposal. Kavkaz among other ports was included in the list of ports transshipping nuclear materials and radioactive waste. The green activists say the port is not suitable for handling the cargo.
