Research platform capsized under tow
In the evening of Nov 26, 2017, the MRCC Turku was alerted by the EPIRB of the small research and survey platform "Esko" which had capsized in the Eskon Vaasa archipelago, southwest of Storgadden. She had been towed by the "Arska" which had left the port of Vaasa at 7 a.m. bound to Rauma, and capsized in severe seas. A small amount of light fuel and hydraulic oil leaked into the sea. The "Esko" had about 3.5 cubic meters of fuel, about 100 liters of hydraulic oil and fuel aboard to operaate the machines on deck. The Finnish Environment Institute was preparing for the fight against environmental damage together with the Ostrobothnia rescue service. There were two anti pollution vessels in Vaasa. With the platform drifting bottom up in the waves 40 miles off Maalahti at a water depth of about 10 meters, the "Arska" departed from the site and berthed in Kaskinen on Nov 27 at 9 a.m. The "Esko" which was stuck on the bottom was to be towed to a more sheltered area as soon as the weather permitted. The platform of the Meritaito Oy can be used for drilling and soil sampling. Finnish reports with photos: https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-9950692 http://www.iltalehti.fi/kotimaa/201711272200563432_u0.shtml
