Tanker towed to Piraeus for repairs

The 'Leon Zeus' has been unloading its cargo of 30.000 tons gas oil products onto the tanker 'Amphitrite', after being immobilized off Greece for nearly a month. The vessel had encountered mechanical difficulties on Feb 20 and was towed to a sheltered mooring south of Kalamata. The cargo transfer began on March 16. After having been fully lightered, the tanker was to be towed to Piraeus for repairs by the tugs 'Vernicos Sifnos' (IMO: 9420435) and 'Taxiarchis' (IMO: 6714536). The tanker berthed at the pier of the Hellenic Petroleum Elefsina Refinery at 2 p.m. where it remained stationary as of March 26.

Tanker towed to Kalamata

The 'Leon Zeus' with 23 crew members on board suffered a mechanical damage in the southern Peloponnes, nine miles southeast of Tinaros, on Feb 21, 2020, and notified the Kalamata and Gythio Port Authority at noon. The tanker was taken to Kalamata under tow of the 'Vernikos Sifnos' and anchored in pos. 37° 0.21' N 022° 3.53' E on Feb 23 at 8.30 a.m. It was banned from sailing until repairs were carried out and a seaworthiness certificate issued by the ship's registrar. The tanker with 32,000 tons of gas oil on board was en route from Tuapse to Tarragona.

Three dead, several saved from rubber dinghy

At least three migrants were killed during a rescue operation when their overloaded rubber dinghy capsized off the coast of Sicily on June 8, 2014. The dinghy was approaching the "Norient Star" to start the rescue operation. Some migrants started to get on board the ship when the dinghy capsized. The migrants were all wearing life jackets, but when the boat started sinking, they began to panic andsome of them became trapped under the dinghy. Approximately 100 migrants from central African were on board the dinghy which departed from Libya.
