Collision off Penmarc'

Sun Aug 24 17:29:44 CEST 2014 Timsen

On Aug 22, 2014, around 3 p.m. the CROSS Etel was alerted that after the collision occurred between the "Arklow Beach" and the trawler "Elluma" about 14 nautical miles SW of Penmarc'. The "Arklow Beach" suffered only minimal damage and continued to Dunkirk. The "Elluma" suffered serious damage at the bow, but no leak. The captain of the ship had breathing problems and a hand injury, his deckhand remained uninjured. After a conference call between the Center of Maritime Medical Consultation (CCMM) in Toulouse, the CROSS Etel and the ship a medical evacuation of the skipper was recommended. THe CROSS Etel dispatched a Cayman helicopter of the Navy Base Lanveoc which took off at 4:10 p.m. and dropped off a medical team at 4:49 p.m. The helicopter airlifted the injured at 5:15 p.m. and headed for the hospital in Quimper. The SNSM-lifeboat from Guilvinec meanwhile escorted the trawler and its remaining crew member to the port of Guilvinec where it was lifted out of the water.
