Dredger suffered water ingress

Thu Jan 31 10:51:54 CET 2019 Timsen

The "Arie Cornelis", 322 dwt (EU-No.: 02103585), suffered water ingress in the night of Jan 30, 2019, in the Elbe port of Oortkaten. The ship with a crew of two on board presumably had run onto a sheet pile and suffered a breach. It started to list and was in danger of sinking. The fire rescue Hamburg was alerted and attended with 75 men. They initially tried to stabilize the dredger with capable pumps. The plan to tow it into a yard on Jan 31 at 1 a.m. failed as the water ingress could not be brought under control. One of the crew members slid onto the deck and suffered a foot fracture. He had to be taken off with a rescue tub and taken to hospital. Meanwhile, the Department of Environment and Energy has taken over the on-scene command. Although the shipyard was only about 100 meters away the way was too far for the torn-up hull. It may therefore be necessary to patch the vessel on the spot. First the approximately 2,000 liters of fuel on board had to be drained to prevent a spill. Oil barriers were laid out around the ship. After divers had pulled a leak sail over the damaged hull region, the cargo hold could be dewaterd so far, that the ship managed to reach the Marine Service Brandt Gmbh in Oortkaten, assisted by the tug "Helene" and the survey ship "Ludwig Prandtl", where it was immediately pulled onto the slipway. She left the yard again after repairs on March 26 at 7.15 p.m. and headed to Ijmuiden, where she arrived at 7.15 p.m. the same day.
