Several injured in allision on the Scheldt

Mon Dec 09 10:59:40 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Aqua Emerald' which provides a service across the Scheldt between Hemiksem and the Steenplein in Antwerp, on Dec 9, 2019, at 6 a.m. was in allision with the ferry pontoon in Sint-Anneke on the left bank of the river. The ship came from the Steenplein and should have sailed - after a stop in Sint-Annastrand - further in the direction of Zwijndrecht and Kallo. The accident occurred amidst strong wind and rain. Police, fire department, ambulance and a UMD team were alerted after the emergency. Several people were injured in the allision, 14 came to the hospital. Two of them suffered serious injuries. A crewmember was taken away on a stretcher by the fire brigade because of a back injury. The ferry suffered considerable damage to the port side bow. The pontoon was slightly damaged by the impact but could still be used. The police started an investigation.
