18 passengers evacuated from grounded clipper

Tue Aug 01 09:37:26 CEST 2017 Timsen

On July 31, 2017, the KNRM was alerted to the "Antonia" which had run aground with 25 people aboardin the Wadden Sea near Pinkegat 10 off Ameland. The KNRM, which was notified at 10.45 p.m., deployed the RIB "Maria Hofker" from Ameland, the lifeboat "De Koning Willem 1", the RIB "Edzard Jacob" from Schiermonnikoog and the lifeboat "Annie Jacoba Visser" from Lauwersoog. Due to the low water level, the lifeboats had to drive around the shallow to get to the sailing ship. The rubber boats could approach it a little bit faster because of their low draft, but they also had too little water under the boat to get to the "Antonia". After waiting for rising water level, the "Maria Hofker" and "Edzard Jacob" succeeded in reaching the "Antonia" at 11.58 p.m, followed by a salvage vessel and the "Annie Jacoba Visser". The skipper wanted to wait for the flood to check if the ship did make water. The lifeboats were asked to remain on standby to evacuate the passengers in case needed. However, urgent advice from the Dutch Coast Guard was made to evacuate the passengers in any case. At 12.30 a.m. the evacuation of the passengers began. They had to walk through the water to the rubber boat could not get closer. The "Edzard Jacob" transferred six passengers to the "Kong Willem 1", which was waiting on deeper water off Ameland. The "Annie Jacoba Visser" took 12 passengers and a dog aboard, of whom six were dropped off at the "Kong Willem 1". The lifeboats then brought the 18 passengers to the KNRM station at Lauwersoog where they arrived at 01:45 a.m. Two crew members and five passengers who had decided to stay aboard in spite of the Coast Guard's advice, remained on board of the "Antonia". The RIB "Maria Hofker" remained on standby at the sailing ship to keep an eye on it. The clipper finally refloated and entered the port of Lauwersoog at 5.15 a.m. Dutch report with photo: https://waldnet.nl/wn/nieuws/56000/KNRM_evacueert_18_personen_van_zeilschip.html
