Two missing, two injured after fishing boat rammed ferry
Two people were missing, and two others have been injured, one of them seriously, following the collision of a fishing boat with the 'Antero de Quental', which was travelling between Barreiro and Lisbon, on Jan 6 , 2025, at 4.55 p.m. on the river Tejo in Lisbon. The two injured were rescued from the water by another vessel, and transported to Cais da Margueira in Cacilhas, where INEM personnel were waiting and assisted them, later transporting them to hospital. Searches were ongoing on the river for the missing victims, but have since been suspended overnight, to resume on the morning of Jan 7, coordinated by the harbour master and local commander of the Lisbon Maritime Police. Resources from the National Maritime Authority and the Captaincy of the Port of Lisbon, the Lisbon Sapper Fire Brigade and a Portuguese Air Force aircraft were involved. The heavily damaged wreck of the fishing boat was towed to shore. The ferry operator Transtejo/ Soflusa has set up an internal inquiry’into the circumstances and responsibilities of the accident, in which the catamaran ‘Antero Quental’ was rammed by the fishing boat. Te ship’s master tried to avoid the collision, namely with several audible warnings, which were ignored by the approaching fishing boat. Fog and inadequate speed contributed to allision
The allision of the "Antero De Quental" with the wharf at Terreiro do Paço on Jan 25 injured 37 people. The accident was caused by excessive speed in combination with the dense fog in Lisbon. The Port captain admitted that the ferry did not navigate at the most adequate speed. Of the 37 injured , 22 were taken to the hospitals of São José, São Francisco Xavier and Santa Maria. A woman was sent to the Alfredo da Costa maternity ward because she was pregnant for 19 weeks. The woman was okay according to the Hospital de São José. All victims were slightly injured, except one man with a fracture in a lower limb. The injured were standing near the exit zone and ready to disembark and fell due to the impact. Passengers were informed that they should not get up before the ship has docked. On the whole 565 people, including four crew members, were on board. 33 injured in allision in Lisbon
The "Antero de Quental" (IMO: 9312638) crashed into the dock at Terreiro do Paço in Lisbon when it was making maneuvers to dock at the quay of Terreiro do Paço upon its arrival from the south river bank on Jan 25, 2017, at 8.39 a.m. The catamaran was serving the route crossing the Tagus river between Barreiro and Terreiro do Paço. 33 passengers were injured. Medical teams were assisting the injured on and outside the catamaran. 22 have been transported to the hospital, 12 to San José, eight to Santa Maria and two to San Francisco Xavier. On board were 561 passengers and four crew members. At the time of the accident there was poor visibility due to the fog. The Maritime Police and firefighters were on scene too, and the police established an exclision zone for the rescue operations. Also a team of divers from Sapadores responded to the emergency call, to see if anyone had fallen into the river or if there was a breach in the hull of the ferry, which was not the case. The operator Soflusa announced that a commission will be established to investigate the accident.
